Social leasing for e-cars: clear approval of car buyers

How can the sale of e-cars in Germany be promoted in the future? One possibility would be the social leasing model, which France is already implementing. Carwow surveyed car buyers and got a clear result!

The successful French model of "social leasing" is also attracting increasing attention in Germany. A recent survey by the online marketplace Carwow shows that a clear majority of German car buyers are in favor of state-subsidized leasing offers for electric vehicles.

According to the Carwow survey of more than 1,000 users, 55% would lease an electric car if the monthly costs were significantly reduced by government subsidies. In addition, 58% are in favor of funding being open to everyone, regardless of income. Only 42% are in favor of limiting it to households with lower or middle incomes.

Price limit at 150 euros decisive

The willingness of consumers to pay is a clear signal to politicians: 45% of respondents would pay over 150 euros per month for an e-car lease, another 25% between 120 and 150 euros. Particularly low rates below 100 euros, on the other hand, are only expected by a minority.

France as a role model – German politics follows suit

In France, the state subsidises up to 27% of the vehicle price – so monthly leasing payments of less than 100 euros are possible. In Germany, too, CDU MEPs such as Peter Liese and Dennis Radtke are calling for the introduction of a similar funding programme. People with an annual income of less than 43,750 euros are to benefit from this in particular. The aim is to achieve broader, socially fair accessibility to electric mobility – regardless of the financial situation.

Funding must not only benefit companies

"The planned special depreciation for commercial e-vehicles misses the core of the problem," says Philipp Sayler von Amende, Managing Director of Carwow Germany. "Our current survey shows that 70% of German motorists are in favour of new government incentives for e-cars, and 67% even say that this would have a concrete influence on their purchase decision. These are not fleet customers – these are private motorists who are currently falling through the cracks."

Sayler von Amende further emphasizes: "If e-mobility is to become a mass market, e-cars must no longer be a privilege for wealthy drivers. Only with targeted, socially just funding models can the federal government achieve its climate goals and shape a real mobility turnaround."
